Over eighty per cent (80 %) of the Kenyan population still rely on charcoal, firewood and agricultural residues as their main fuel for cooking, lighting and construction purposes. The practice is not only one of the leading causes of rapid deforestation, biodiversity loss and climate change crisis, but is also responsible for 22,000 deaths every year to girls’ and women tasked with related activities. The fruit trees also provide a space for food security and a carbon sink.
